Old Boys 2nds sparkle in the storm

Old Penarthians RFC 2nd XV 35 v Llandaff RFC 2nd XV 5

Saturday 21st October, Old Penarthians Seconds welcomed Llandaff Seconds to Cwrt y Vi in wet and blustery conditions. It proved to be a decisive home win in tough conditions.

The visitors' kick-off hung in the headwind but was returned at pace by Tony Kemp. Strong support and recycling by his fellow Old Pens pinned Llandaff in their 22m for 10 minutes until an inside pop from James Williams put Scott McCarthy in between the posts, the conversion opening his account with 7 points. The next 10 minutes saw more balanced competition in midfield until a break into Llandaff’s half where Williams squandered a sitter begging Jordan Tyler to score, the move ended with hardworking Dan Godfrey being held up just short. At the resultant scrum, quick delivery from Lee Brennan and hooker Adam Davis to George Kynaston at 9, put Nick Healy, dancing in between the posts. McCarthy’s 2nd conversion put the Old Boys ahead 14:nil after 26 minutes.

Llandaff’s high restart struggled in the crosswind but their next 10 minutes of midfield play did not endanger the home 22m. Strong tackling wrapping up ball carriers and preventing the rucks gave Old Penarthians possession and territory. Alex Lewis's yellow card for a desperate high challenge allowed Llandaff  the advantage. Capitalising on a lapse of concentration at rucktime near the home 5m line, Llandaff’s prop sniped into the corner, evading slow tackling. The conversion kick drifted wide on the wind, the lead cut to 14:5.

The restart was difficult to control allowing Old Penarthians to occupy the visitors' 22m, pressure from Dan Marshall, Nick Boudier and Rob Rees at rucks, earned the scrum that led to Healy’s second under the posts which McCarthy converted. 21:5. Lewis returned to the field just before half time to capitalise on the efforts of his teammates, crossing for the bonus point try, converted by McCarthy. Half time 28:5 to Old Penarthians.

The second half commenced in heavier rain, despite this Kemp's barnstorming run from his 22m line well into the visitors’ half delighted the soggy touchline support although his efforts were wasted by a knock-on from his player support. The game balanced with both teams launched attacks, counterattack and mounted solid defensive efforts. Tough scrummaging in slippery conditions finally told on Llandaff’s prop and required substitutions and passive scrums. Paul Rapley, Rob Adams, Liam Union, Rhys Hughes, were brought on to enliven the team whilst Scott Phillips’ hard work on the wing rewarded by a move to loosehead. Despite this the second half remain scoreless despite thrilling breaks by both sides that were thwarted by last ditch tackles. Kemp’s Ronaldo chip to recover a dying pass should have been the high light of the second half.  However decisive breaks from the final substitutes Chris Rees, Chris Cobbold and John Speake in the last quarter set up Matthew Stingl’s charge scoring between the posts just before full time. Union’s conversion concluding an enthralling winning performance at 35:5 to the hard working Old Boys.
